Semental Resection and Replantation for Maligmant and Aggressive Benign Bone Tumor

Abstract
With the recent further development of anticancer chemotherapy, limb salvage operation is the limelight as the treatment of malignant bone tumor. When comparing amputation and limb salvage operation, while performing anticancer chemotherapy in
both
cases, 5 year survival rate, recurrence and distant metastasis did not show much differences and this is due to the excellent functional result of the limb salvage operation. We studied the segmental resection and replantation for the tumors
around
the
knee and the shoulder joint in 19 cases from February 1988 to June 1990 at Severance Hospital .
@ES The summerized results were as follows:
@EN 1. Among 19 cases, 8 were giant cell tumor, 7 osteogenic sarcoma, 2 chondrosarcoma, 1 chondroblastoma and 1 Ewing's sarcoma.
2. Of the 19 cases, we performed the segmental resection and rotationplasty for the tumors around the knee joint in 11 cases and Tikhoff-Linberg operation for the tumors around the shoulder joint in 8 cases.
3. The tumors around the knee and shoulder joint were completely removed by the segmental resection and replantation without amputation or disarticulation.
4. Among 11 cases which segmental resection and rotationplasty were performed, all patients were able to walk without difficulty wearing the prosthesis; in all 8 cases which Tikhoff-Linberg operation was performed, the function of the hand was
almost
normal
5. After an average observation period of 29 months, there was no evidence of the local recurrence in any cases and 2 cases of the osteogenic sarcoma which did not receive proper anticancer chemotherapy showed the evidence of the distant
metastasis.
